01THE HEADLAND

Every January we haul fifty-seven acts and eighteen thousand of you onto a headland at the edge of the Gorse Coast, hand you a refill flask and let the tide take over. Nine years running, the beacon still hasn't objected.

03THE EXPERIENCE

24 HOURS
ON THEclifftop

A loose timeline of a Salthowl Saturday. Times are approximate. Hangovers not included, but probable.

06:40

The campsite stirs

Mist between the tent lines, someone's kettle hissing on a gas burner, a stranger offering you half a pastry. Camp Tern at dawn is the quietest eighteen thousand people ever get.

Coffee brewing 6am
10:15

The cold dip

The rock shelf below the Tidepool stage turns into the world's coldest hangover cure. Lifeguards on duty from 9am. Screaming allowed, expected, basically required.

19:52

Golden hour at the Big Tern

The sun sinks behind the main stage, the confetti cannons fire, and you hug a stranger from the refill queue. This becomes your profile picture for the next eleven months.

Confetti is paper. Naturally.
21:10

The art wander

The Tern King glows on the clifftop: ten metres of salvaged hull and fishing float, built by a dozen people over nine weeks. Walk beneath it, lose your friends, find new ones.

Wickhouse after dark

Lasers cutting through sea fog, a kick drum you feel in your molars, and the beacon sweeping over the chaos every twelve seconds. Bedtime is a rumour.
